Why be concerned about your water supply?
Waterborne viruses and bacteria in drinking water supplies
are a serious problem in Ireland and constitute a genuine
threat to the nation's public health and wellbeing. The
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in a recently
well-publicised report on the quality of drinking water in
Ireland, stated that water supplies should be 'free from any
micro-organisms and parasites and from any substance which,
in numbers or concentrations, constitute a potential danger
to public health'. In addition to the well-publicised E-Coli
bacteria, there are several other equally poisonous
micro-organisms potentially present in our drinking water -
such as cryptospyridium, which accounts for 5% of diarrhoea
in children in Ireland.
What are the benefits of softened water?
Softened water washes completely away without leaving scum
behind. It makes laundry softer and brighter and makes
glasses and dishes sparkle and shine.
Softened water saves time - independent studies have shown
that considerable cleaning time is saved by using softened
water. It can also save some 50% of washing powder and
toilet soap consumption and similarly cut the use of
shampoos, conditioners and cleaning products.
Softened water provides real cost savings in service,
maintenance, and replacement of water heaters, dishwashers,
washing machines and showers, it also extends their life.
It will improve the efficiency of hot water and heating
system - just 1.6mm (1/16") of scale build-up in heating
systems will cause a 12% loss in heating efficiency.
Softened water can also remove existing scale deposits in
hot water and heating systems as well as the scale around
taps, in shower heads and stains on baths and basins.
Why use
Ultra Violet Light to purify water?
Sterilisation of water supplies using Ultra Violet (UV)
light is a technique which is rapidly growing and gaining
favour over chemical techniques. The advantages of using UV
light are many-fold, and include neither colouring, creation
of foul taste nor smell on the water and rapid killing of
bacteria and viruses, e.g. cryptospyridium. UV may be
further used to generate ozone, which is also an effective
germicidal substance.
Water Treatment with Reverse Osymosis.
Reverse osmosis is a filtration process that uses pressure
to force a solvent through a filter that retains the solute
on one side and allows the pure solvent to pass to the other
side.
The membranes used for reverse osmosis have a dense barrier
layer in the polymer matrix where most separation occurs. In
most cases the membrane is designed to allow only water to
pass through this dense layer while preventing the passage
of solutes (such as salt ions)
In the United States, household drinking water purification
systems, including a reverse osmosis step, are commonly used
for improving water for drinking and cooking. |
